What Types are There of Flu Vaccines

All flu vaccines are quadrivalent for the 2021-2022 flu seasons. They will protect against four viruses: one influenza A virus (H1N1) and one influenza A virus (H3N2) viruses.

The CDC recommends that every person 6 months of age and older gets vaccinated once a season. Children aged 6 months to 8 may require two doses of vaccine during the first season. Right up arrow

Your immune system takes about two weeks to produce antibodies, proteins in your blood that fight infection.

The CDC states that annual flu shots are especially important for those at risk of serious complications from flu.

Are there any side effects from flu shots?

A common side effect of a flu vaccine is redness, swelling, or soreness at injection sites. There are other minor side effects that may occur, such as a low grade fever, headache, achiness and fatigue. However, these symptoms are rare and usually temporary.

The flu vaccine can cause severe allergic reactions, just like any other medicine. But, according to a study published in The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, the risk is rare in all age groups. There were 1.31 cases for every million vaccine doses.

Studies have indicated a possible link between flu shots and Guillain Barre syndrome, a progressive nerve disorder causing profound weakness lasting weeks or longer. These studies indicated that GBS could be a risk to fewer than one or two cases per 1 million vaccine recipients. Other studies have not indicated any association.

People with allergies to eggs and Guillain Barre syndrome need to talk to their healthcare provider before they get the flu vaccine. Additionally, if you don't feel well, it is a good idea to consult your doctor before being vaccinated.
