Flu Shot: What to Know

Although most vaccines provide lifetime immunity for many reasons, flu vaccines must be administered each year. This is because each flu season can be different and the flu shot protects you against the most common influenza viruses in that particular year.

How effective is Flu Shot?

"In general, the flu vaccine will protect about two-thirds of persons who get it," says Jon McCullers, MD, the pediatrician-in-chief at Le Bonheur Children's Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. "This is dependent on many personal factors like age, previous flu vaccines and immune system.

The flu shot is not a guarantee that you will not get the flu. Flu viruses constantly change (mutate), which allows them to bypass the protections we have built up with flu vaccines.

A third factor that can affect flu shot effectiveness is the inability of seasonal flu vaccine strains to match circulating strains. According to the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), this could be a contributing factor to flu shot efficacy.

You can also expect to see a decrease in immunity among older adults and people with chronic conditions.

While flu vaccines don't work 100% of the time, it is less likely that flu complications will occur in those who have been vaccinated.

"Even if the flu vaccine doesn't work, there are still some protections because the immune system can make antibodies that can recognize and bind to the virus in the event of an unexpected strain," says Kevin Harrod (Doctor of Medicine at University of Alabama).
